Look at the following example below:
|I have smoked 20 cigarettes today.||I smoked 20 cigarettes yesterday.|
|Today is a period of time which continues to the present time. It is not finished time, so we use Present Perfect Tense.||Yesterday Is a finished time in the Past, so we use the past simple tense.|
As can be seen from the above example we us “Present Perfect” when there is a clear connection with the “Present time”, while, we use “Past Simple” when we want to tell about something in the “Past” only.
The “Present Perfect” always tell us something about the present.
The “Past Simple” tell us only about the past.
